Why not just name folders well?

Because a name has to be read. Shape and colour are noticed before reading starts, which is why you can find the red book on a shelf without scanning the spines. A row of identical blue folders turns every lookup into a reading task; a folder with its own face is found before you have finished looking.

An icon is a small commitment to what a folder is for. Deciding which five or six folders deserve one is the same decision as deciding which folders you actually use. The rest tend to get merged, archived, or quietly deleted, and the desktop gets lighter without a cleaning session.

Won't a colourful desktop look messier?

Only if every icon is a different style. One silhouette and a small palette read as a system rather than a sticker bomb. That is why the generated collections in IconPop all keep the real folder shape and only change the colour and the mark on the front.A good rule: pick one family, then stay inside it.

No. IconPop sets a folder's icon; what is inside the folder is never touched. Removing an icon or a whole collection from the library moves the artwork to the Trash, where you can get it back.

Where does the artwork come from?

The generated collections are made from your Mac's own folder icon, recoloured. Composed icons are built from SF Symbols. Everything else in the library is what you imported. Nothing third-party is bundled.

Can I save a composed icon as an image file?

Accepted Answer

No. Apple licenses SF Symbols for use inside an app's own interface, not for files that leave it. Applying a composed icon to your own folders is the supported use; exporting one as an .icns, .ico, or PNG is not offered, because that would turn a system-provided glyph into a file you could pass around.

A few good places to start: The Noun Project has millions of icons in a consistent style, free with attribution or paid without. macOSicons makes Mac-style icons for exactly this — replacing folder and app icons. Irasutoya has a huge library of playful Japanese illustrations, free for most uses. Flaticon rounds it out with a broader mix of styles. Each site sets its own license — check before using an icon commercially. IconPop just applies whatever image you bring in; it doesn't check rights for you.
